The Carpenters’ union hosted the monthly meeting of the Northeast Indiana Central Labor Council in its building, and since I represented an affiliated group within the United Steelworkers union, I was always welcome at the table.

I put on my gown and tucked myself into bed. I was skeptical that a thin piece of foil would be enough warmth for me in that ice box. But thankfully, it wasn’t your typical sheet of Reynolds. This had a vacuum attachment blowing warm air into the pockets of the foil. It’s safe to assume, the inventor of the mammogram machine is not the inventor of this cozy blanket.

From South Bend, Indiana, to the island of Puerto Rico, five people were able to live on because of Uncle Ed’s organs, and countless others were healed through his tissue donation. I don’t recall if Uncle Ed ever traveled the world. I’d guess he let his exploration happen within the pages of his comic books. Still, knowing a piece of him was thriving on an island paradise was a comfort. Uncle Ed made a real difference. There were living, breathing humans on the other side of that trauma, which enabled our family to grieve and honor his memory.

It still burns my ass that I took this cancer with me on a two-month expedition of a lifetime to explore my ancestral homeland and to find my roots through the buildings and the smells and the food that is the Siclian culture. It was living la dolce vita inside of me without me being the wiser until I returned home for my annual mammogram and checkup.
All the pizza. The vino. The Cacio e Pepe. That rat bastard definitely had a vacation to write home about. Its last and final adventure before the knife appeared.
